Today, on Little Things We Notice When We Rewatch White Christmas:
In the episode where the whole Mireu-Youngjae-Yoonsu triangle comes to light, Youngjae has this one line… that I think is pretty amazing. Youngjae says that if he had known about Yoonsu’s plans, he wouldn’t have helped him, because “I’m not that brave”. All by itself, this is already mindblowing, because listen, this is our bully, acknowledging the fact that someone in that building is braver than he is. This tells us a lot about him… but also about Yoonsu.
Yoonsu isn’t a violent person. We never seen him start a fight (except for those two occasions I’ll address in just a second). The one time he is attacked - by Mireu -, he doesn’t fight back. The one time we see him get really, REALLY angry - again, at Mireu -, he doesn’t get physical.
Nevertheless, later on, he attacks Youngjae. TWICE.
And I think Youngjae realises he’s pushed his buttons. Because when the group starts their witch hunt, Yoonsu is the first, after Youngjae himself, to choose a weapon. It’s a huge contradiction, because he’s already shown us that’s not who he is. He’s not Youngjae V2.0. So why act like he’s taken a liking to violence all of a sudden?
He picks up a weapon, and Youngjae watches him for a couple of seconds before getting this really, really creepy smile on his face. I knew you’d come around eventually. That’s how I read that smile.
So they find their target. Youngjae goes berserk, but he’s the only one - Muyeol doesn’t move, neither does Jaekyu, neither does Yoonsu. So Youngjae looks back at him, as if wondering, hey, why didn’t you strike, you looked so excited about this. They bicker as usual, Youngjae threatens to kill him, Yoonsu apologises and calls him buddy, but when the group walks out of the room… he tells it like it is, looking straight at Youngjae with that cocky little smile.
"The cowards are usually the most violent." And this line is just perfect, because it reinforces Youngjae’s own words. Youngjae isn’t as brave as he is, he’s a coward, and so he hurts people. But Yoonsu is brave, which means he isn’t a coward, which means… he doesn’t hurt people. Sure, you can read this scene under the assumption that Yoonsu wanted to be a big bad bully but chickened out in the end. I prefer to read it under the assumption that he never even meant to use the weapon he chose. He did it for shock value, and to prove a point. I’m not like you people.
Considering the final episode, I think this might just be the single most brilliant piece of fucking foreshadowing I’ve ever seen. Yoonsu gets it. Yoonsu is not like the rest of them. And then, in the final episode, when the group is together and we get that other perfect line, “the egg is about to crack”, Yoonsu isn’t referring to himself. No. He means everybody else. And it’s pretty funny how Youngjae is the first to react to that line. Because he gets it, too. After all, he’s the one who’s been told. This violence thing… it’s in your hands, buddy.
PS - And listen. This explains why he lashes out at Youngjae even though it’s so out of character for him. The first time he hits him, he’s beyond terrified. And the second time he hits him, he’s still processing that fear. Brave people get scared too. So it’s actually perfectly in character for him to be violent in those two scenes, because he’s scared out of his mind.
I hate this show.
